Albuquerque, NM – At midday over 500 tribal representatives and community members and organization rallied for the protection of Standing Rock Sioux Tribal lands in North Dakota from the Dakota Access Pipeline. The pipeline threatens tribal sacred sites and water on Army Corps lands adjacent to the reservation. The Army Corps can approve or deny the final permit needed to complete construction, and the only Corp office in the West outside of California is the one in Albuquerque.
The Albuquerque protest is one of hundreds <https://actionnetwork.org/event_campaigns/nov-15-nodapl-day-of-action-at-army-corps-of-engineers?referrer=350-org&utm_medium=email&utm_source=actionkit> across the nation and around the globe that will take place in solidarity with tribal leaders in North Dakota. Protesters will also bring attention to the impacts of fossil fuel extraction in New Mexico where expanded oil and gas operations are putting cultural heritage sites like Chaco Canyon and adjacent communities at risk.
