FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 16, 2016 – A new partner in the challenge to address climate change and end extreme fossil fuel extraction has joined the effort in New Mexico. New Mexico Story Power amplifies voices from the front lines where extreme fossil fuel extraction threatens the lives and culture of the people of New Mexico.

As the dialogue around climate change has been dominated by politics and money, New Mexico Story Power aspires to humanize the conversation through personal accounts and visual narratives.  Throughout time story telling has helped to shape our understanding of world events, our history, and our own sense of self. Expanding the stories told, in regard to fossil fuel extraction, will expand the understanding of the issues involved and more importantly illuminate its impact on lives, communities, and the environment.

Kendra Pinto is the first featured story teller, as New Mexico Story Power launches their website and corresponding social media. Ms. Pinto is a Native American living in Nageezi, New Mexico and has become a witness to the consequences of fossil fuel extraction on Native American communities.

“Once things go through, there’s really nothing we can do about it. It’s time to talk now. People need to share stories about how they get headaches in the morning or when they’re out walking how they smell propane in the air; I want people to not be afraid to speak out.”

Her story highlights our shared human concerns about health, community, and the challenge of communicating with each other. Future stories will feature people who are directly experiencing the impacts of oil and gas extraction as well as those who are trying to move New Mexico from fossil fuels to clean energy. Through interviews and multi-media projects, New Mexico Story Power strives to connect us to the stories of the past, present and future to expand our understanding of the consequences of fossil fuel extraction and to incite a desire within our communities to connect and engage with the climate justice movement.
