"Last night, the Corrales Village Council passed a resolution, 4-1, requesting the
Sandoval County Commission pass a moratorium on all new oil and gas drilling
applications for six months. This would allow the Commission time to adopt
comprehensive planning and zoning ordinances.

The resolution stems from recent attempts by SandRidge Energy Corp. of Oklahoma to
drill an exploratory well only two miles from the Rio Rancho city limits. Local
residents say that the County was not prepared to deal with fossil fuel extraction
so close to homes and municipal water wells.

"We are encouraged by the action of the Council in their support of a moratorium on
drilling. We look forward to working with the County Commissioners in preserving our
clean water and air," said Eleanor Bravo, New Mexico Organizer for Food & Water
Watch and Corrales resident."
