Monday March 28, the Bernalillo Town Council passed a resolution,
4-0, requesting the Sandoval County Commission pass a moratorium
on all new oil and gas drilling applications for 6 months. This
would allow the Commission time to adopt comprehensive planning
and zoning ordinances.

The resolution action follows the passage of the same resolution
in the Village of Corrales the previous week and stems from recent
attempts by SandRidge Energy Corp. of Oklahoma to drill an exploratory
well only two miles from the Rio Rancho city limits. Local residents
say that the County Zoning ordinances were not adequate to deal with
fossil fuel extraction so close to homes and municipal water wells.

“We applaud Mayor Jack Torres and the Bernalillo Town Council for
recognizing that if fracking takes place in nearby communities,
the aquifer serving neighboring towns and villages could be impacted
negatively. Their unanimous support of a moratorium is a strong
recommendation for the County to adopt a moratorium immediately,”
said Eleanor Bravo, New Mexico Organizer for Food & Water Watch
and Corrales resident.
